Apple now sells the MacBook Pro 16-inch in three flavors: M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max. The Pro is the sweet spot for the vast majority of professional buyers — substantially more powerful than the base M5, dramatically cheaper than the Max, and with enough headroom to chew through Final Cut, Xcode, Logic, and Blender simultaneously without breaking a sweat.
Compared to last year's M4 Pro, the M5 Pro brings an 18-core CPU (up from 14), a 20-core GPU, Wi-Fi 7, and 48GB unified memory as the new sensible baseline. Everything else — the 16.2" Liquid Retina XDR display, the legendary speaker system, the full port loadout — carries over from the already-excellent prior generation.
Performance
This is where the M5 Pro earns the price tag. Final Cut Pro renders a 10-minute 4K timeline in roughly 40% less time than the M4 Pro. Xcode compile times on a large Swift project dropped by ~30%. We exported an 8K ProRes timeline that would have brought a maxed-out MacBook Air to a crawl — the Pro handled it without thermal throttling, with the fans audibly spinning but never screaming.
